Speed study set limit on Highway 35

Published September 15, 2009

HOW IT WORKS

Glad You Asked features questions from Facts readers. Facts staff members pose those questions to newsmakers who provide the answers.

POSE A QUESTION

Have a question for Glad You Asked? E-mail news @thefacts.com, fax it to 979-265-9052 or drop it off at our offices in Clute or Angleton.

QUESTION: Why isn't the speed limit on Highway 35 the maximum of 65 mph from Angleton to the Brazoria/Matagorda county line, and then 70 mph on to Bay City? This is a new four-lane divided highway, and the vast majority of drivers are doing 70-plus anyway. Thanks!

ANSWER: This office conducted a post-construction speed study on this segment of Highway 35 from the north city limit of Bailey’s Prairie to the Brazoria/Matagorda county line on May 2008, and based on factors including the 85th percentile speed of the traveling public, roadway geometry, vertical and horizontal curves, hidden driveway and driveway density, the appropriate speed limit was determined to be 60 mph.

Any issue with the speed limit enforcement should be directed to the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office or Texas Department of Public Safety for further handling.

If you should have any further questions concerning this matter, please contact me at 713-802-5074 or through the Web site txdot.gov.
