Exporters sail in third quarter
Published November 21, 2007
FREEPORT — Brazosport broke open a tight game in the third period to pull out a 79-61 victory over Calhoun on Tuesday night at E.E. “Flash” Walker Gymnasium.
Coupled with the Lady Ships 75-32 win over the Lady Sandies, it was a clean sweep for Brazosport over Calhoun.
A full-court press by the Exporters in the third quarter started their run as the Sandcrabs turned the ball over on five consecutive possessions to begin the period. Brazosport went on an 11-2 run as Darren Woodard had five points and Melvin White four to expand the Exporters’ three-point lead to 49-35 with 4:29 left in the third.
Woodard finished with nine points in the period as Brazosport outscored Calhoun 20-7 to take a commanding 58-40 lead. The Sandcrabs committed 12 turnovers in the third quarter.
In the first half, both teams both struggled with misses at the bucket and turnovers. Calhoun, led by Josh Daniels’ seven points and Marcus Blevins’ six, had the early momentum.
A long field goal from Blevins gave the Sandcrabs an 8-6 lead. A three-point play by Woodard put Brazosport back on top, 9-8.
Dajon King gave Brazosport a late spark in that first quarter with some nice hustle on both ends of the court.
The Exporters built on their lead with a free throw by King and then a steal by the Brazosport defense. Malcom Bonner sank the short jumper right before the buzzer for a 20-16 lead.
Bonner finished with six points in that first and Woodard had nine.
Brazosport and Calhoun fought back and forth in the second quarter. Every time Brazosport tried to increase its advantage Calhoun came right back with a bucket by Daniels — who finished with 10 points in the second quarter.
With a minute left before intermission, Calhoun took its last lead of the game as Carlos Cortez got a nice assist from Corey Barrientos to make it a 31-30 game.
However, Cole Hines came back on the other end and sank a trey to give Brazosport the lead for good, 33-31. The Ships were 0-8 from 3-point land until Hines’ connected.
The loss dropped Calhoun to 2-1. Daniels finished with 24 points to lead the Sandcrabs.
Woodard had 26 points to lead the Exporters (1-1). Brazosport next plays at 2 p.m. Saturday at home against Brazoswood.
