QUESTION: There are people with pit bulls and loud music gathering at T.J. Dunbar Park at the same time our U6 soccer games are going on. I found it extremely hard to enjoy the soccer games this weekend because I was so concerned with the large number of what could be dangerous dogs just a chainlink fence away.
Unfortunately, this is not the first year this has occurred, so I have been told.
ANSWER: An individual did rent Dunbar Pavilion to have a “dog show,” but the breed or breeds of the dogs were not specified on the rental document. This particular show involved dogs that are a mix of pit bulls and English bulldogs. I understand about 40 dogs were in the show and participants came from as far as Austin, San Antonio, The Valley and the Dallas area.
Yes, there have been other dog shows at the pavilion in the past including this group. Our interim parks director has spoken to the renter and the renter has agreed they would work around the soccer schedule for any future events.
Also, we are discussing altering our rental agreement to put in possible requirements to have security present for such an event as well as a requirement to list the breed or breeds of the dogs to be featured at a show. We did have a police officer check on this event, and the officer did ask them to turn the music down. We do have a noise ordinance and each renter is made aware of the requirements, which differ somewhat for daytime and evening rentals.
There have not been any incidents at the various dog shows held at Dunbar Pavilion in the past, although we did get a similar complaint in the past when this particular group rented the pavilion by someone concerned about the breed of dog being shown.
Anyone wishing to address this issue with the Parks Board and/or City Council is encouraged to contact the City Secretary’s office at 979-415-2403 to get this item on the appropriate agenda.
