US leaders usually get it right in the end

Published November 1, 2009

So many people don’t realize how big and beautiful America is and what it stands for. After 80 years of traveling and serving my country, I can appreciate our leaders and their dedicated work.

Regardless of the party in control, there are laws and rules they have to govern by. Sometimes they are in error, but generally get corrected — Elk Hills Oil Field (1927); Mississippi levee system, 3,500 miles; Intercoastal waterway (1919); U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (1779); Saint Lawrence project; Tennessee Valley Authority (1933), covering seven states; Hoover Dam (1936); grand Coulee Dam (1945); the secret city (Oak Ridge, Tenn., established for the Manhattan project in early 1940s); Aiken, S.C., home of Clarks Hill Dam and the Hydrogen bomb plant (1950); strategic petroleum reserve (under our nose); Interstate highway system; Alaska (purchased from Russia on the cheap); national parks and forests; Great Smokey Mountains; and on and on and on.

How do you think all of these national and local projects get started then maintained? By our — mine and yours — government, both elected and appointed. How do you think they are paid for? By me, you and corporations and a long summary of other forms of taxation.

America the beautiful, although getting crowded, we still seem to all want to live in the same place and be left alone and pay no taxes. We don’t want to share, only make more money.

Remember you only have so much time here on Earth, (about 26,000 days), so why not let’s all be happy and be healthy?

Love your neighbors and yourself. Show respect. Honor your parents. Obey all laws. And if you believe, have faith. Keep informed as to what’s going on in the world and keep prepared for the best and the worst.

Chills run up my spine when the “Star Spangled Banner” is played. Standing with my hand on my heart shows I still and always will love my country.

I hope you share my feelings, and if you do, this great country will survive and the world will know that we are great.

God bless the president and our leaders.
