Angleton reigns at Pearland tournament
Published January 25, 2008
PEARLAND — Angleton kicked off the cold, soggy opener of the Pearland Varsity Soccer Slam 2008 Tournament with a dominant performance on Thursday.
The Ladycats scored six first-half goals and sloshed their way though the final 30 minutes of play en route to a 7-0 win over the Channelview Lady Falcons at Presner Stadium.
“The field was in much better condition at the start of the game and we were able to take advantage of that,” Angleton head soccer coach Janet Lumpkins said. “We got some quick goals one after another, but then the field got sloppy and it was hard to keep our footing.”
Rain let up before the match began but the turf already was soaked and came apart easily. Halfway through the game the green grass gave away to puddles and slick mud.
Angleton junior forward Heather Aker recorded two goals, including the lone second-half score, and had two assists. McKensea Cooey had a goal and one assist.
Ladycats Katie Hughes, Lauren Talley, Natalie Miguel and Courtney Dahl all had first-half goals. Hughes’ score came early on when she bent a corner kick between the goal posts to put Angleton ahead 3-0.
Kiley Thomas and Cameron Arias each had one assist for the Ladycats (6-2).
“We got things done in the first half and that was a good thing,” Lumpkins said. “I think the girls were worried more about staying up than scoring in the second half with that lead and in those type of conditions with the field and the cold.
“It’s a game you’re happy to win and come out without any injuries.”
The Ladycats are coming off the Waller Tournament championship and will play at 2 p.m. today at The Rig against Alief Elsik. Elsik shut out Brazosport 3-0 in its first-round match.
