BLUE SANTA GOLF TOURNEY BRINGS IN MONEY FOR GIFTS
Freeport police raised more than $10,000 at the department’s Blue Santa Golf Tournament on Oct. 23, Freeport police Lt. Allen Lawson said.
“It’s a great number,” Lawson said.
Proceeds from the event pay for gifts for children who otherwise might have to do without.
Last year, golf tournament proceeds allowed the police department to wrap 3,000 gifts for more than 450 families with more than 900 children.

DITCH WORK SET TO END SOON
Contractors are finishing up work on Plantation Drive near Lazy Lane where a ditch project has caused road closings, Clute Public Services Director Gene Tumlinson said.
The city put in a culvert to increase drainage under Plantation Drive and is finishing up sidewalk and slope paving this week, Tumlinson said.
Though there soon will be four lanes open to traffic again, city workers will put in reflectors and striping within the next couple of weeks, he said.

DEPUTY BACK AT WORK
Sheriff’s Deputy Gary Edwards has returned to work after an inmate pushed by him Thursday in an attempt to escape from the Brazoria County Courthouse.
Sheriff’s officials said Willoughby Tocker, 29, bolted from a holding cell Thursday morning and ran through a courtroom, shoving Edwards and pinning him to a bench. Tocker got outside the courthouse, then hit another deputy, Andy Kutch, in the face with part of a lamp, sheriff’s reports show. He was caught soon after.
Edwards was treated for a bruised back. Kutch needed stitches and suffered a concussion. He is due back to work Thursday, officials said.
Tocker faces felony escape charges and assault of a public servant, officials have said.

WOMAN RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL
A woman who was taken by medical helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston after a car accident early Sunday morning was released from the hospital Monday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Ruby Ruiz, 53, was in her vehicle at the intersection of Highway 332 East and Flag Lake Drive in Lake Jackson when the driver of a 1995 Chevrolet pickup, 43-year-old Veronica Bass, failed to stop in time and hit Ruiz’s vehicle, Lake Jackson Police Cpl. Patrick Solis said.
An ambulance took Bass to Brazosport Regional Health System where she was treated and released and a blood sample was obtained to test for alcohol. Both women were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident, and police do not suspect Ruiz had been drinking.

CHURCH BAZAAR A SUCCESS
People from, “all over the area” helped make the Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church Bazaar, “a great atmosphere” this weekend, said Cheryl Scott, pastoral associate at the church.
“It went really well,” Scott said of the event which included children’s games, food booths, silent and live auctions and other entertainment. “We had a great turnout. Several thousand people came and went throughout the day.”
A final count isn’t complete, but Scott said the turnout and money raised could set a record.
The event this year included a Saturday morning fun run entered by 72 people. Because participation was so good, the church likely will expand the run next year, she said.
