High school football previews for Nov. 5

Published November 5, 2009

Dobie (3-3, 4-5) at Pearland (5-1, 7-2)

7 p.m. Friday at The Rig

OVERVIEW: The Pearland Oilers are perfect at home this year (3-0) and want to keep it that way against Dobie. As the second seed from District 22-5A, Pearland will venture for the 11th straight year.

Juniors Trey Anderson (97-for-163 passing, 1,242 yards, 12 touchdowns, two interceptions) and Dustin Garrison (160-1,071 rushing yards, 8 touchdowns) have earned quite a year of experience. Senior Mr. Do-It-All Miles Kanipes has been a big help on offense and defense. Kanipes has thrown for two touchdowns, run for two more, caught six touchdown passes and is one of the leaders on defense in tackles.

Blake Jackson (49-for-103 passing, 709 yards, six touchdowns, one interception) leads the Longhorns from under center and Demarcus Boyd (70 carries, 367 yards, six touchdowns) is their top rusher. Joshua Monette has 52 tackles on defense.

Brazosport (1-5, 3-5) at Texas City (2-4, 3-6)

7 p.m. Friday at Stingaree Stadium

OVERVIEW: Last year at this time the Exporters were preparing for a do-or-die game against Texas City to get into the playoffs. This season, the Ships know they can’t make it to the postseason, but they can play a spoiler role against the Stingarees. Tailback Dexter Brown (110 carries, 642 yards, five touchdowns) has stepped in for the senior Gary Bivens, who was lost for the year with an injury.

Texas City can make the playoffs but must beat Brazosport and get lucky. The Stings need a victory, a Manvel win over Angleton and a La Marque loss to Friendswood. That would set up a three-way tie with Santa Fe and Manvel. In that scenario, the point-differential tiebreaker ends up a tie and there would be a a coin flip between the three teams to determine the playoff berth.

Bay City (0-4, 1-8) at Crosby (7-0, 7-2)

7:30 p.m. Friday at Cougar Stadium

OVERVIEW: The Blackcats are the odd man out in the five-team District 23-4A for the second year in a row and will be playing for pride against the Cougars. Derek Brown has thrown for 663 yards and seven interceptions for Bay City, while Courtney Finney leads the ground attack with 342 yards and three touchdowns.

Crosby is the 19-4A district champ and is led by Dominic Merka (1,003 passing yards, 662 rushing yards) and Jakacy Evans (683 rushing yards, 14 touchdowns).

Columbia (0-4, 1-7) at Stafford (0-4, 5-4)

7:30 p.m. Saturday at Spartan Stadium

OVERVIEW: A couple of winless teams in District 26-3A will finish up the season with one league win. The Roughnecks and Spartans both are out of the playoff loop. Coming back for Columbia next year will be juniors quarterback Daymond Lewis (150 carries, 1,02 yards, five touchdowns; 46-for-113 passing, 495 yards, two touchdowns, nine interceptions) and running back Sean Flannel (111 carries, 537 yards, eight touchdowns).

After starting the season 5-0, Stafford fell into some tough times in district play. Boris Anyama (106 carries, 505 yards, eight touchdowns) and Phillip Pete (59 carries, 436 yards, five touchdowns) lead the option attack.

Danbury (1-3, 1-8) at Industrial (4-0, 8-1)

7:30 p.m. Friday at Cobra Field

OVERVIEW: It would be a monumental upset for the Panthers if they are able to upend the first-place Cobras on the road. Danbury’s defense continues to play solid and enters the season finale ranked second in District 29-2A by holding opponents to 236.4 yards a game.

Industrial’s only loss came Sept. 25 against Refugio, 42-6, but it since has put together five consecutive wins.

A Cobra win will give Industrial its second straight undefeated season in 29-2A.

Van Vleck (1-3, 2-7) at Tidehaven (1-3, 3-6)

7:30 p.m. Friday at Delvin L. Taska Stadium

OVERVIEW: The Leopards big 13-9 win against Boling on Friday created a situation that could put them in the playoffs.

“It is kind of like deja vu for that third place spot for us,” Van Vleck head coach Michael O’Guin said. “It did put us in position, but we are going to need help. Our kids are going to have to focus because Tidehaven is a big county rivalry, but Boling’s back is against the wall.”

A win against Tidehaven, a loss by Boling to Hitchcock and a Danbury loss to Industrial puts the Leopards into the postseason because of the Leopards’ win over the Bulldogs. But if Danbury upsets Industrial and forces a three-way tie, Boling would win the tiebreaker and make the postseason.

West Columbia Charter (8-2) at Pasadena First Baptist (5-3)

1 p.m. Saturday

OVERVIEW: West Columbia Charter is coming off a 51-2 win against San Antonio Radiance Academy and now wants to end the regular season on a high note. The Warriors will be one of eight teams — four in Division I and four in Division II — in the Texas Christian Athletic League playoffs. The Division I Warriors will host semifinal games at Griggs Field.

“With eight teams in the playoffs, four will be coming here to play in West Columbia and the other four will go to Hutto,” West Columbia Charter head coach Kenny Montgomery said.

West Columbia Charter will play Nov. 21 at Griggs Field with the championship games Nov. 28 in San Antonio.

“Some of the schools that might wind up here are San Angelo, Baytown and Houston,” Montgomery said.

Pasadena First Baptist is coming off a 64-18 win against Killeen Memorial last week and is on a three-game winning streak.
