Warriors rumble over Lions
Published November 1, 2009
WEST COLUMBIA — The West Columbia Charter School Warriors continued their march toward the six-man high school playoffs with a 51-2 mercy-ruled victory over the Radiance Academy Lions on Saturday at Griggs Field.
The Warriors scored 33 points in the first half and followed that up with three third-quarter touchdowns to put the contest in the books.
The game ended on a 53-yard pass play from Alex Ortega to Brad Ellis on the final play of the period.
Although a blowout victory is always nice, WCC coach Kenny Montgomery didn’t feel his players performed up to playoff standards in the game. The Warriors have one regular season game remaining before the postseason begins.
“I wasn’t real pleased with my kids today,” Montgomery said. “They made a lot of mistakes and their heads weren’t in the game. There were some good parts, but we made way too many mistakes. We are coming into the playoffs, and if we make those kinds of mistakes in the playoffs we’ll get bounced out of it.”
The Warriors (8-2) had two fumbles in the game, including one that resulted in a turnover. They also had a number of penalties, including some that halted drives. One first-quarter penalty negated a touchdown.
“It’s nice to win, but I’d rather see a really close game and our kids have their heads in the game, not having penalties, no fumbles, no false starts,” Montgomery said. “We have to eliminate those mental things because that’s how you hurt yourself.”
Although the Warriors didn’t play a perfect game by their standards, they made far fewer mistakes Saturday than Radiance Academy.
WCC snared three interceptions — two by Ortega and one by Roman Fiffie — along with a fumble that was scooped up by Kenny Holmes.
On offense, Holmes and Ellis were key weapons with three touchdowns each. Ortega added two scores of his own and threw another one.
The scoring began with a 4-yard touchdown run by Ellis for an early 6-0 advantage.
The Lions (4-4) then looked to gain a little momentum by earning a safety to cut the lead to 6-2.
Ortega single-handedly shifted the momentum back in the Warriors’ favor, though, by picking off a pass and sprinting 27 yards for the score on the Lions’ next possession.
The first quarter ended with WCC ahead, 12-2.
The Warriors dominated the second stanza with Ellis, Holmes and Ortega all reaching the end zone.
Ellis’ score came on a 31-yard run, while Holmes raced it in from 41 yards out.
After Ortega’s 10-yard scoring run, WCC went into the half with a comfortable 33-2 advantage.
WCC converted all three extra-point attempts in the quarter, including a pass from Jeremiah Davis to Reggie Bess, an Ellis run and another pass, this time from Holmes to Ortega.
The Warriors put the game away in the third quarter with two rushing touchdowns by Holmes, from 7 and 16 yards, and an Ortega to Ellis 53-yard touchdown pass on the final play of the period to end the contest via the mercy rule.
WCC held the Lions to 95 yards of offense, including minus-9 yards on the ground.
Radiance Academy quarterback Vincent LeBron completed only 14 of 31 passes for 104 yards.
On offense, Holmes finished with 95 yards, followed by Davis with 54, Ortega with 44 and Ellis with 30.
WCC ended with 275 yards of total offense, with 222 coming on the ground.
WCC closes its regular season with a road game at 1 p.m. Saturday against Pasadena First Baptist.
