Bikers rev it up for charity

Published July 10, 2006

ANGLETON — Howard Goe’s black Ultra Classic rumbles in front of Tracy Read’s shiny red model. The bikes are the largest and maybe the loudest motorcycle made by Harley Davidson.

The lead bikes’ growling tail pipes set off a ripple of rolling booms in the parking lot of Goe’s Cycles on Sunday where 145 motorcycles are ready to ride for charity.

Bikers helped Brazosport Harley Owner’s Group raise more than $1,500 and hundreds of assorted school supplies during the 15th annual school supply ride, said Read, the group’s director.

Roll call included members of Southern Proud, Republic Harley Owner’s Group Chapter, Christian Motorcycle Association and Los Malos.

“It’s a great thing. There are probably very few groups that help as much as bikers,” Read said. “It doesn’t matter what colors you wear or who you ride with. When it comes down to an event where they’re helping the community, you never know who’s going to show up.”

Black leather vests repelled sprinkles from threatening dark clouds before the ride, but sunshine prevailed as the pack rode to Freeport Municipal Park.

“It doesn’t matter if it is the hottest of weather or the worst of weather; we still do it,” Eileen Repp said. “I think it’s nice for us all to come together.”

Repp, Texas’ longest card-carrying female Harley Davidson member, stood about 100 motorcycles from Doug Jenkins, a member of a Surfside motorcycle club called the Gypsys.

“They call me Spiderweb,” he said, turning around to show the back of his vest. “It’s for a good cause. That’s why we do it every year. We do it for the kids.”

Yellow, orange and black vests delineated clans, but some good-natured feuds were pushed aside Sunday as bikers got ready to ride together. Deby Crook, who sold raffle tickets inside the store, said that bikers ultimately come together because of their love of charity and devotion to bikes.

“It’s one big party,” Crook said. “It’s fun anytime you get together and ride. It’s a way to share a common love.”

Donations will supply children from the Brazoria County Youth Home, Brazosport ISD and Angleton ISD, Goe said.

“It doesn’t matter what kind of bike you are riding,” Goe said. “These people all have big hearts. If they didn’t they wouldn’t be here.”
