‘A Time to Prey’
Published October 18, 2009
LAKE JACKSON — There’s no need to check the lunar calendar. Fans of werewolf action can rest assured there will be plenty of the lively lycanthropes on hand for Halloween-season theater-goers at Brazosport College.
Starting Thursday, the drama department presents “A Time to Prey,” the final installment of the werewolf “thrillogy” by faculty members Karen and Byron Gernand. Performances will be at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday of this week, as well as Thursday and Friday, Oct. 29-30.
However, the Halloween-night show on Saturday, Oct. 31 will begin at 10 p.m. — and feature a costume contest at intermission.
The horror-comedy werewolf story kicked off with “In Sheep’s Clothing” in 2006, with “Wolf Trap” following last year.
“This picks up exactly where No. 2 left off,” Director Byron Gernand said.
Karen Gernand — a self-professed fan of horror and Edgar Allen Poe — teaches English and literature at Brazosport College, while Byron teaches drama.
The action again revolves around the meeting room of AHA, Addicts Helping Addicts. Once it was a place where the werewolves lured victims while hiding their identities and dealing with their human addictions. Now the werewolves are fighting for survival.
The previous installment ended with the werewolves dying after the alpha male of their group was killed. But after finding a surprising way of staying alive, Lee (James LeCompte) and Bitsy (Meghan Pond) return to the self-help group in “A Time to Prey,” vowing to take revenge upon the new leader, Rex (Trace Tonche).
The motley group of addicts includes Johnnie the sadist (Jennifer Walters); Drew (Bobby Britton), who’s addicted to Broadway musicals; David (Dustin Cordoba), an omniphobe who fears everything; a smoker, Ashley (Kelly Evens); Jess (Kiara Dill), who’s vexed by an inappropriate sense of humor; and compulsive liar A.J. (Michael Zingleman).
The appearance of vampires adds a mysterious new twist, as does the presence of the Slayer, a human played by Bre Standfest.
“It’s the darkest of the three, but there’s still plenty of humor,” Byron Gernand said, adding this was the only trilogy installment to not have preparations interrupted by hurricane evacuations.
Gernand said “A Time to Prey,” which features adult situations, suggestive language and, of course, werewolf attacks, is for mature audiences.
Very different fortunes befell the werewolves in the first two installments, and audiences will learn of their fate in the finale. But, regardless, Gernand said it’s likely their story has come to an end.
“There’s no plans at this point to carry the werewolf saga any further — it was conceived as a trilogy,” Byron Gernand said. “I don’t know what we’d call it after a ‘thrillogy’ — maybe a ‘quadrology’?
“It’s a mixed bag of feelings. There’s a sense of relief, of accomplishment ... But it’s bittersweet in that there’s been tremendous enjoyment in doing this.”
