County might open its own health clinic

Published November 8, 2009

EDITOR'S NOTE: This story has been corrected after the collowing correction was posted — The Brazoria County Commissioners Court will meet at 9 a.m. Thursday. A story in Sunday’s edition of The Facts contained the incorrect date.

ANGLETON — Brazoria County commissioners could appoint a committee to examine the possibility of streamlining health care when they meet in the county courthouse at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Two weeks ago, commissioners heard a presentation from Darrell Wells, of Odessa, who said the county could save money in the long run by opening its own health care clinic.

The county currently pays $588 per employee for health insurance per month and care costs about $9 million per year, Human Resources Director Jim McCoy has said.

A committee would look into the cost effectiveness of hiring a medical staff instead of employees filing claims with various doctors and health clinics, said Arthur Velasquez, Executive Assistant to County Judge Joe King.

“The committee could possibly come up with recommendations to the court,” Velasquez said. “We need to look at our health costs.”

Also Tuesday, the court will consider appointment of a committee to consider the possibility of additions to the adult detention center.

They also could agree to begin moving the adult probation department to the courthouse East Annex. That building, on Highway 35 north of downtown Angleton, currently houses the County Clerk and housing and Urban Development offices, Velasquez said.

Also on the agenda are consideration of right of way purchases along CR 58 and Big Island Drive in Precinct 4 and CR 94 in Precinct 2; acceptance of roads in Southfork and on CR 94 at American Canal and CR 101; removal of an underground storage tank at the Precinct 3 North Service Center; and hiring independent contractors to help with administration of the H1N1 vaccine.

A complete agenda is available at www.brazoria-county.com.
