ACC Learning Lab focuses on students’ needs
Published October 28, 2009
ALVIN — Earning a college degree isn’t supposed to be easy. It’s supposed to be challenging and push people past their comfort level in order to learn and grow.
That doesn’t mean people have to meet those educational challenges alone. The purpose of the Alvin Community College Learning Lab is to help students grasp and conquer new and challenging concepts by offering one-on-one tutoring in many subjects, workshops to improve learning strategies and other services.
“If they’re struggling with any class or need reinforcement, we likely have ways to help them,” said Lynda Vern, director of the Learning Lab and chairwoman of the reading department at Alvin Community College.
Tutoring provides students an opportunity to have course material explained and demonstrated in a private setting where mutual discussion of the topic can often lead to better understanding.
“When I don’t understand what my professor is saying, I can come to the tutoring center and they pretty much do every step with me over and over until I get it,” said student Karla Gonzalez of Manvel. “They (Learning Lab tutors) are very helpful. If it wasn’t for tutoring, I’d probably be failing (math) right now.”
According to Vern, students benefit from the quality of tutoring available, as well, since most tutors are instructors in their discipline.
Tutoring in math, biology, anatomy and physiology, physics, accounting, reading, history, government, geography and English are available. Assistance with report writing for any subject also is offered.
“Dual-credit students come to us in mass, especially for help on their English papers,” Vern expressed.
In addition to providing tutoring, the Alvin Community College Learning Lab hosts individual and group workshops that help students implement better learning techniques that apply to their unique needs and experiences.
“We can have students do a self-assessment for learning styles so they can figure out how they learn and what study methods would work best,” Vern said. “We can also help them overcome test anxiety and improve their time management.”
The Alvin Community College Learning Lab also serves as a testing center for TBA and other classes and a lab for reading, math and GED students.
“The computers in the Learning Lab are open to all students to do math tutorials, write papers or use for other assignments,” Vern said. “They can even come in to check their e-mail or print for a nominal fee of 10 cents a page.”
Vern also encourages students to ask for academic support services that may not already be available.
“Our goal is the success of our students,” she said. “If there is a way we can help, we will.”
