Swimmers dive toward Freeport

Published November 30, 2007

FREEPORT — The Brazosport Natatorium will become a bevy of activity the next few days during the Brazosport Swim Invitational.

Ten schools will participate in the event starting today. Hosts Brazosport and Brazoswood welcome Angleton, Alief Taylor, Elsik, Hastings, Fort Bend Bush, El Campo, Stafford and Dickinson.

Dickinson will only partake in the diving competition, set for 5 p.m. today. The swimming portion of the meet will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday.

“So far it’s still early in the season and we’ve only competed in one big meet,” Brazosport swim coach Robert Brown said. “I will have nine girls swimming this week and our numbers are up. Last year I only had four of them so now we can do relays.”

Seniors Dara Dalton and Megan Laurie will be a couple of key participants. Dalton will swim the breaststroke while Laurie is entered in the 50-meter freestyle.

Also competing will be Lady Ship junior Jessica Saldana, sophomore Christann Cavazos along with five freshman.

“Jessica is one of our returners but I haven’t decided yet where to race her,” Brown said. “Christann I know will be one of the top four in the relays. Our freshmen, I am just trying to see if they can draw some good times this week.”

The Exporters have been one of the top swimming teams in the region the last few seasons. With state returners Forest Hughes and Jared Bontekoe, both juniors, the team is geared to continue that trend.

“Forest competed in the 50 free at state last year and so far has done well in both meets we’ve been in this season,” Brown said. “He placed third at the Lamar Consolidated Meet, which is a huge 4A invitational meet that just about every one attends.”

Hughes finished with a time of 23.03 seconds in the 50-meter freestyle and was the only Exporter to finish in the top 10 at the meet. He also swam the 100-meter freestyle.

One of Hughes’ top competitors will be his teammate, Bontekoe. Both will swim the same events this week.

“I am short-handed with boy swimmers this week with only three,” Brown said. “The rest have other school activities that will take them away from this meet. Brazoswood will be one of the top teams coming in because of numbers, but Angleton and Alief Hastings will be very competitive.”

Brazosport will not have any divers participanting.

Some of Brazoswood’s top swimmers competing on Saturday will be Cody Armstrong (2:00 in the 200 freestyle, 55.93 in the 100 butterfly), Ethan Vesling (2:14.20 in the 200 individual medley, 58.95 in the 100 backstroke) and Michael Pham (53.23 in the 100 freestyle, 1:16.20 in the 100 breaststroke)

Armstrong, Vesling, Pham and Kent Devine will swim the 200 medley relay (1:45.45) as well as the 200 freestyle relay (1:34.11).

Lady Bucs’ Linda Paul will swim the 50 freestyle (26.5) and 100 backstroke (1:05.80) while Ava Vesling will take on the 50 freestyle (28.0) and 100 breaststroke (1:16.20). Veronica Maes will compete in the 100 butterfly (1:14.11).

Ashley Schaefer and Mike Hamper both will compete in the diving portion of the meet for Brazoswood.
