Tennis team plans fundraisers to fix courts
Published November 7, 2009
CLUTE — Though the tools the Brazoswood tennis team members usually use to improve their game are rackets and balls, members are switching to soap and water today.
The Brazoswood High School tennis team will have a carwash from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at Sonic on Highway 332 West in Lake Jackson to raise money to resurface the school’s tennis courts.
The school district’s $166 million bond, rejected by voters Tuesday, would have included money for resurfacing. The team now will have to raise the money on its own, continuing an effort that began in the spring, Coach Linda Turek said.
It will cost at least $36,000 to resurface all nine courts, Turek said, and the team has raised $9,000 through tournaments and fundraisers.
The courts have not been resurfaced since 1996, Coach Janet Steffler said. Ideally, the courts would be resurfaced every five years, she said. The resurfacing is needed so students and the public will have safe courts to play on, Steffler said.
They hope to at least have three courts resurfaced by the end of the year, Turek said.
The team will start selling Butter Braids midmonth as a fundraiser.
