Spill raises stink on San Bernard
Published November 24, 2009
BRAZORIA — Cleanup of an oil spill on the San Bernard River should be finished within a few days, and those who live and fish along the river have no need for worry, officials said.
“The cleanup contractor has pretty much gotten the bulk of it cleaned up, they’re just picking up spotty areas of it now,” said Kenneth “Doc” Adams, Brazoria County’s emergency management coordinator.
The spill happened Saturday morning on Tara Petroleum Inc.’s property, and cleanup began soon after Susan Brockert and her husband, who live along the river, notified police, Adams said.
“There was a tank battery out there and they had spilled some oil within their containment area and the rain washed that into the river,” General Land Office spokesman Jim Suydam said.
About 100 barrels spilled on the property, and an estimated 10 barrels, or 420 gallons, leaked into the river after the rainfall, he said.
The area is about 2 miles downriver from the Churchill bridge on FM 2611, and it spread about 300 yards downriver from the spill, Adams said.
“They’re using absorbent to pick it up in the river and on land. Most of it they’re picking up with suction trucks,” Adams said. “We still have the contractor down there picking the oil up that’s in the water.”
The response to the oil spill came quickly and a contractor was on scene to clean it up as soon as the General Land Office could get one out there, Suydam said.
Because of the quick response, there should be minimal impact to wildlife near the river, and there are no fishing advisories in effect, Adams said.
