Lights go out on the Lady Exporters
Published January 23, 2008
FREEPORT — After a rather lethargic first half in which his team trailed by a 3-0 count to visiting Santa Fe, Brazosport girls soccer coach Steve Slater was hoping his Lady Exporters would come out in the second half and play lights out.
But six minutes into the second half on a chilly, misty evening, a blown transformer south of Hopper Field made all the lights go out, and sent both teams home.
“Man, can’t say that I have seen this happen before,” Slater said. “After the way we looked in the first half I just wanted the kids to go out and play the way they are capable. Santa Fe just flat outplayed us in that first half, but I had really hoped we would come out and turn things around.”
No decision has been made on whether the match will be canceled or continued later.
The 4-0 Lady Indians dominated the first half, spending most of their time on the Brazosport end of the field attacking the goal. Santa Fe managed attempts on goal, scoring three times.
The Lady Indians broke the scoring ice with 29:30 left in the opening half when freshman Kelsie Greenough raced past Lady Exporter defenders and punched it in from 10 yards out.
The visitors came right back with 20:11 left in the half and scored on a penalty kick by freshman Mary Hunt and finished out the scoring with 14:57 to play in the half when junior Alex Langley peddled by the Lady Exporter defenders and pounded the net with a shot.
“We seemed kind of flat-footed out there in the first half,” Slater said. “Santa Fe played very well and they certainly have some team speed, but I really thought we could have played better. We needed to step it up. I would like to have played the entire game, but hopefully our kids will get something out of this game.”
