Columbia finishes season with overtime victory

The Roughnecks’ season came to an end on a high note with a 27-26 overtime win over Stafford.

Columbia opened the extra period with the ball, and Trey Maret scored on a 4-yard touchdown. Caleb Eddy’s extra-point made it a 27-20 lead.

Royal came right back in overtime and scored on Phillip Pete’s 14-yard reception from Boris Anyama. After a penalty on the extra-point try pushed the Spartans back 5-yard, Stafford went for the win on a two-point try that was stuffed by a Columbia sack.

“It was a good way to go out on the season,” Columbia head coach Leland Surovik said. “I was really happy for the seniors to get that win. That’s something they’ll remember for the rest of their lives. And to end with a win, it’s good for the young kids coming back and something to build on for next season.”

Columbia tallied 554 yards of offense and had 393 yards on the ground. Junior Sean Flannel who ran the ball 26 times for 225 yards and a score. Broderick Thomas had 13 carries for 71 yards, and Chazman Easton scored on a 19-yard run.

Tyler Ince was 13-for-20 passing for 145 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Columbia finished 1-4 in district play and 2-5 overall. Stafford won its first five games of the season but were winless the rest of the way.

WARRIORS WIN: The West Columbia Charter Warriors finished the six-man regular season with a come-from-behind 66-59 win against Pasadena First Baptist on Saturday.

Pasadena took a 14-13 lead in the first quarter until the Warriors took control in the second and went into halftime up 31-28.

Quarterback Kenny Holmes led the offense with a 9-for-16 passing day for 60 yards and four touchdowns. He had one interception. Jeremiah Davis ran for 147 yards and caught two touchdown passes. Brad Ellis rushed for 51 yards and two touchdowns and caught three more touchdown passes.

On defense, Ellis had 13 tackles, Alex Ortega had 11 tackles, and a fumble recovery and Davis finished with eight tackles, a sack and safety.

The Warriors are 9-2 and will open the playoffs this week.

BUC FRESHMAN ROLL: The Brazoswood freshmen Blue team beat Galveston Ball, 42-0, Thursday night.

Brazoswood scored on all of its possessions as the defense held the Tors to 60 yards of offense.

Gage Ford had an interception and Lucas Kibodeaux recovered a fumble for the Bucs. Other defensive standouts were Riddick Houston and Joe Rios.

Scoring for Brazoswood were Angel Sanchez on a 60-yard run, Ibrahim Baida on a 40-yard pass from quarterback Chris Miller, and C.J. Jones with two runs of 20 yards. Offensive standouts include Julian Shepard, Frank Hernandez and Jacob Fielding.

LJI STAYS UNBEATEN: The Lake Jackson eighth-grade A team improved to 6-0 on the year after beating the Nolan Ryan Longhorns, 26-22, on Tuesday.

Ryan Ross ran for four touchdowns for the Panthers. Other standouts were Lane Harralson, Charlie Fleener, Caden Crowder, Hunter Ogle, Aaron Villanueva, Quinn Hendrix, Steven Gonsalves, Ruben Dorbecker and David Gregg.

The Panther defensive kept the Longhorns in check by forcing two turnovers late in the game to seal the victory. Defensive standouts were Ross (interception and a fumble recovery), Crowder (forced fumble), Harralson, Gonsalves, Villanueva, Baily Kalka, Chris Vardeman, Terry Godoy and Chris Byrd.

The Panthers finish the season at rival Clute on Tuesday.
