WEST COLUMBIA — In the cross-county rivalry game Friday night between Columbia and Brazosport, Mother Nature won.
The game at Griggs Field was suspended with 6:28 left in the third quarter with Columbia leading 17-14 after a severe lightning storm passed through the area and wasn’t expected to let up.
The game will not go into the record books for either team, and it will not be made up.
“It’s disappointing,” Columbia coach Leland Surovik said. “I know (Brazosport coach Brian) Welch is too. You could see both teams wanted to win. You really have to look out for the safety of the kids in something like this.”
Brazosport had just scored with 6:28 left in the third on a 7-yard run by Gary Bivens. The score seemed to give the Exporters some life, but then weather put a stop to the comeback.
Columbia had rallied from a 7-0 first quarter deficit with 17 unanswered points to take the lead at the half.
After Caleb Eddy put the Roughnecks on the scoreboard with a 32-yard field goal in the second quarter, Columbia gained some momentum on a big defensive play.
Brazosport looked poised to extend its lead when Columbia’s Treylen Johnican recovered a Brazosport fumble at the Columbia 1 and returned it to the 32. A personal foul penalty put the Roughnecks in great field position at their own 47.
Columbia quarterback Daymond Lewis capped the 52-yard drive a few plays later with a sneak over the goal line to give the Roughnecks a 10-7 advantage.
With only a few seconds before the half, Roughneck linebacker Richard Rhodes put a big hit on Brazosport quarterback Kris Quiller. The ball was knocked loose and scooped up by Roughneck defensive end Bradley Swanks, who ran it into the end zone from 15 yards out with just 12 seconds remaining in the first half.
Brazosport looked like it was in control early.
Bivens capped a 73-yard drive with a 32-yard touchdown run with 6:40 left in the first quarter to give the Exporters a 7-0 lead. Bivens finished with 124 yards in the shortened contest. Every yard on the drive was picked up by Bivens on the ground.
