BAL greets holidays with ‘Gift of Art'

Published October 18, 2009

LAKE JACKSON — The Brazosport Art League’s annual holiday exhibit and fundraiser — the “Gift of Art” and “Silent Auction 2009” opens to the public Oct. 27 in the art gallery at The Center for the Arts and Sciences, 400 College Drive in Clute.

The reception will be 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, and the show will remain on display through Jan. 3. This year’s event is sponsored by Brazoria County Pct. 4 Commissioner Mary Ruth Rhodenbaugh.

This marks 12 years since Rhodenbaugh, who was then the director of Habitat for Humanity of Southern Brazoria County, got the idea for a silent auction. She contacted Orren Gaspard, director of The Center for the Arts and Sciences, who along with then-Brazosport Art League President Laura Brandes, set the wheels in motion for a silent auction that would be held in conjunction with the art league’s “Gift of Art.”

Thus formed a long-lasting partnership between the Brazosport Art League, the Brazoria County Woodcarvers Club and the Brazosport Woodworkers.

Together, they donate members’ works of art for the silent auction, and all proceeds are donated to Habitat to help build affordable housing in Brazoria County.

Money raised from the sale of donated artwork over the years was enough to build a Habitat house in Lake Jackson, known as “The House That Art Built.”

Members of the Brazosport Art League, Brazoria County Woodcarvers Club and Brazosport Woodworkers Guild all are eligible to donate works to the silent auction. There is no limit to the number of items an individual can donate.

“The Gift of Art” is a show of small artwork open to all members of the art league. All artwork must be original and done within the past two years. Each member can submit five pieces, each not to exceed 20- by 24 inches including mat and frame. Artists contributing 3-D works should use common sense regarding size. The Brazosport Art League has the right to reject inappropriate entries.

All artwork must be for sale, framed and wired for hanging. “Gift of Art” buyers can take their item upon purchase. The artist must replace each piece sold with one of a similar size.

Artwork will be accepted from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday (no pieces will be accepted late). However, you can make arrangements to bring your artworks earlier.

For special arrangements or information, call Sally Webster at 979-297-6313 or Marjorie Suggs at 979-299-6891.
