DPS trooper, bound for Kuwait, honored

Published October 26, 2009

LAKE JACKSON — For Navy Master at Arms Second Class Petty Officer Brandon Borden, being unable to see his children for at least 14 months is the most difficult part about deploying to Kuwait on Nov. 1, he said.

“They’re still young, but my oldest will probably notice I’m not there,” Borden said during a send-off celebration Sunday afternoon in his honor at MacLean Park in Lake Jackson.

The celebration was attended by members of the Brazoria County Cavalry, Blue Knights of Brazoria County, Brazosport Harley Owner’s Group and many friends and family.

Brandon Borden’s wife, Katie, has been with her husband since they started dating in high school, and she’s also having difficulty thinking he won’t be around when their two children, ages 3 and 2, enter pre-school, she said.

“Pre-school and kindergarten are big things in our family and he won’t be able to see them go to school,” Katie Borden said. “That’s going to be hard.”

Brandon Borden, 24, of Clute is also a Freeport-based Department of Public Safety trooper who will likely serve as a customs security officer in Kuwait, he said.

While he’s gone, Brandon’s family will miss him, but knows he’s doing his job and praying he’ll come home safe, said his mother, Bridgett Borden.

“I love him so much; he is amazing,” Bridgett Borden said.

“The DPS has been wonderful to him. He loves his job and he loves kids,” she said. “He’s taken his job very seriously, takes his job in the Navy very seriously and he’s a good kid, a good son, a good husband and a good father.”

Brandon Borden’s father passed away in January, but his strength still holds the family together, Brandon’s brother, Robert Borden, said.

“I can guarantee you right now our father’s looking down on us and he’s going to be with Brandon wherever he goes to protect him and be there for us for support and strength,” Robert Borden said.

“He’d not be a man of many words, but I can guarantee he’d be the one to tell you how proud he is of you.”
