QUESTION: I’ve got a follow-up question to “Hazardous Sidewalks” printed Aug. 18. Who do we call in Lake Jackson about this? I was told the city will not fix the sidewalks and claims it is the homeowner’s responsibility. How can this be?
The sidewalk in front of my house is probably 4 inches below the level of my neighbor’s driveway. I can see under the concrete slab. On the other side in front of my neighbor’s house the sidewalk is broken and the sewer cover probably is 4 inches above the level and the concrete is all broken up. I can’t let my daughter ride her bike down the sidewalk any more for fear she’ll crash. She’s only 5. It’s like this all over my neighborhood. Help!
ANSWER: Sidewalks are the responsibility of the homeowner. Typically the sidewalk is installed by the builder when the home is built. As we have been rebuilding streets over the past 20 years or so, we have been replacing the sidewalks along those streets at the same time. Once those sidewalks are rebuilt, maintenance again reverts back to the property owner. This is an ongoing process and is funded by bond issues approved by the voters.
Now, if there is a problem near a water or sewer cover, please call our Public Works Department at 979-415-2430 and we will take a look at that particular location.
