FREEPORT

Man hospitalized after exposure to chemical

A Nalco Chemicals employee was taken by helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston after a chemical made contact with his skin, a Brazoria County Emergency Management official said.

The man, whose name and age were unknown, was using a forklift at about

1:53 p.m. to move cylinders of toluene diisocyanate when a collision popped a valve on one of the cylinders, County Emergency Management Coordinator Kenneth “Doc” Adams said. About 10 gallons of the chemical released from the cylinder.

Acute exposure to high levels toluene diisocyanate in humans results in severe irritation of the skin, eyes and nose, and causes nausea and vomiting, according to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Web site.

Drainage directors

to discuss bid process

West Brazoria County Drainage District directors are set to meet at 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Brazoria County Maintenance Barn, 1001 Market St.

The Monday meeting is to discuss the 2008 bid process and review bids the district has received.

Directors will move into executive session to discuss the a condemnation/counterclaim on Cedar Lake Creek at FM 521, a complaint made by Brazoria resident John Corder and a personnel matter concerning director Bobby Henderson.

Also on the agenda is the swearing of the oath of office for new director Opal Vollbaum.

The special meeting called at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Brazoria County Mainten-ance Barn is to draw for ballot positions for the May 10 election.

Council to discuss bids for water tank inspection

City Council is set to discuss proposals for its water tank inspection and cleaning when it meets at 7 p.m. Thursday in council chambers at City Hall, 195 N. Texas Ave.

Council members will discuss bids from Ron Perri Water Technologies or an alternate proposal for the job.

Board to discuss 2008-09 employee contracts

Sweeny ISD trustees are set to meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the All-Purpose Meeting Room of the Administration Building, 1310 Elm Street, to discuss the renewal of professional educators’ contracts for the 2008-09 school year.

The board also is set to discuss re-upholstering and refinishing auditorium seats at the high school and a request for a sealed proposal for suspended gymnasium flooring.

Board to conduct survey

Columbia-Brazoria ISD trustees are scheduled to have a special meeting at

1 p.m. Sunday in the Wild Peach Elementary Cafeteria on CR 353 in Wild Peach to distribute information to board members and interested community members about a door-to-door survey.

Training will take place about the survey requirements and then board members and others will distribute the survey to members of the Wild Peach community to satisfy grant requirements for repairs to Oiler Drive, which runs next to the school.
