Athletes prepped for cross-country regionals
Published November 5, 2009
At stake Saturday will be a trip to Round Rock for state cross-country championships. But first runners must get through the Class 5A and 4A Region III meets at Lone Star College in Houston.
In Class 5A, the Brazoswood Buccaneer cross-country team has had balanced year with both the boys and girls teams their share of awards this year. Each squad qualified to the regional meet with second-place finishes at the District 24-5A meet.
Bucs freshman Xavier Jimenez finished second in the district race with a time of 15 minutes, 42 seconds. Teammate Roland Cantu was in third at 16:08, and both are hoping to land in the top 10 on Saturday and earn a berth to state.
“I am looking for both Xavier and Roland to improve quite a bit on their times if they want to make the top 10,” Brazoswood cross-country coach Devin Theriot said. “We had a good week of practice and we are looking strong. Xavier is a freshman but he thinks he can win. He is pretty confident.”
Race time for the boys is at 12:50 p.m.
Also representing Brazoswood are Josh Raymond (16:31), Hugo Deleon (16:31), Patrick Cantu (16:33), Jakob Baumeister (16:45) and Christian Barrera (16:56).
“Team-wise, there are about five teams that we haven’t beaten yet, and right now I’d say we are fifth to seventh on paper at least,” Theriot said.
For the Lady Bucs, Noemi Lucero finished 10th at the district meet in 12:16. Joining her at the regional race will be teammates Sidney Allen (12:27), Kayla Contardi (12:36), Megan James (12:56), Miranda Grey (13:08), Jenna Pisarski (13:25) and Audrey Ripple (13:50).
The girls race starts at 12:30 p.m.
“Pearland has got a good team, as does Deer Park, Kingwood, Cinco Ranch, Clements and Clear Lake. So it is going to be hard for us,” Theriot said. “We are probably top 10, but the girls are so young with four freshmen and a couple of sophomores. I will lose two runners from this team for next year.”
The girls will have a new Class 4A Region III champ this year — Brazoswood graduate Lauren Smith won the last three and finished 18th her freshman year. She is now running at the University of Arizona.
In Class 4A, Pearland Dawson, Angleton, Manvel and Brazosport will all have representatives in their regional meet. The girls race begins at 11:40 a.m. and the boys take off at noon.
The Dawson Lady Eagles won the District 24-4A title. Freshman Mary Luster came in first place at 13:16.64. Running with Luster will be Ericka Taylor (14:06.83), Allura Matz (14:10.58) and Rachel Rhodes (14:11.28).
Brazosport qualified the most runners to the region meet in quite a few years.
Getting their crack at a state appearance will be Lady Ships Ashley Waddy (14:12), Devonne Castro (14:15.29), Caitlynn Graham (15:04), Brenda Lopez (15:42), Michelle Moreno and Alexandra Caro.
Running for the Brazosport boys will be Mario Muraira (17:18) and Josh Waddy (17:27). Both finished in the top 10 at the district meet to qualify for region.
There is only one Manvel runner headed to Houston — Lauren Feuz (13:53.44), who placed second in the district contest.
Heading back for the second year in a row are the Angleton Wildcats.
“It is going to be mostly the same guys that went last year,” Angleton Wildcat cross country coach Paul Eby said.
Leading the way is senior Harvey Manning (16:51), followed by Daniel Ortega (17:14), Ariel Landaverde (17:18), Oscar Orizaba (17:22), Jamie Garcia (18:25), Anthony Hernandez (18:50) and Oscar Trevizo (18:53).
Angleton finished second as a team at the district meet.
“Their workouts have been more of a sprint-style workout this week,” Eby said. “We’ve gotten away from the slower-style runs and given them the high-speed intensity.”
