Bike tour to benefit museum
Published October 5, 2005
In its infancy, the First Capital Historical Bike tour makes its second appearance after attracting more than 150 riders last year.
The bike tour, which is set for Saturday, will benefit the West Columbia Historical Museum.
The tour will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday with registration from 7 to 7:45 a.m. at the West Columbia city park. Three routes are available — 27, 39 and 60-mile courses.
The starting point for the tour is First Capitol Park, off Highway 35 on North 13th Street.
The routes consist mostly of flat back roads around West Columbia with no hills.
“We are going to have rest stops every 10 to 11 miles on these routes,” event coordinator Randy Emler said. “This is not a race. Last year, we got families, couples and a mix of people.”
Registration costs $30 for single riders, $55 for tandem and $60 for families.
Energy drinks and fruit will be provided at the rest stops with a lunch to follow the tour from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“We were hoping to double this year, but due to the hurricane evacuation we don’t think we will,” Emler said. “But it is still scheduled and we will be there hoping people come out. Last year, we had a seven mile route hoping locals would take advantage of it.”
A total of $2,500 was raised during last year’s tour and the funds went for a new roof at the Columbia Historical Museum.
The museum houses a quilt collection, ranching display exhibit, transportation exhibit with steam boats portrayed, oil display when the area was a boomtown in the 1920s and a mural that tells the story of West Columbia.
“This museum is owned and operated by community volunteers,” president of the Columbia historical board Nita Kiennemer said. “We’ve been collecting items from the era of 1836 and on. Our other fund-raiser was canceled due to the hurricane.
“This year we are hoping to apply the funds to the Rosenwald Columbia School restoration.”
West Columbia was the first capital of the Republic of Texas. Stephen F. Austin died in the area and was buried in Southern Brazoria County before being moved to Austin.
