Drag racers converge on Angleton

Published November 14, 2003

ANGLETON — Records are expected to be broken this weekend at the Angleton Dragway when the Texas Outlaw Racing Association comes to town.

The Outlaw Fall Showdown, a showcase of Outlaw 10.5, Pro Modifides and Texas Stock Association cars, begins tonight with qualifying at 8 p.m. The gates open to fans at 11 a.m. on Saturday with qualifying set to begin at noon.

The finals are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

“It’s a collaboration of several parties,” said Will Hanna of Pro Race Communications. “We ran a similar event in July with the Nitro funny truck. We hope to end the year with a bang.”

Hanna said rain put a damper on the scheduled event in September, but he plans on having a large contingent of racers competing this time around. With roughly 20 to 25 Outlaw 10.5 cars, 12 to 20 stock cars and local racers looking to test their cars on the track, Hanna expects upward of 50 to 60 cars on the track at any given time.

“We’ve done a lot of advertising,” Hanna said. “We’ve done print advertising in area newspapers and have gotten the word out by word of mouth, fliers and through the internet.”

Whereas smaller-scale tracks typically have trouble attracting consumers, the internet has given organizers a new way to get the word out. The Texas Outlaw Racing Association (www.TORAracing.net) and the Dragway (www.AngletonDragway.com) Web sites are two places fans can get information about various events in the area. The TORA site contains information regarding all TORA-sponsored events.

“The internet is a valuable source (for race information),” Hanna said. “It’s not the main source, but it is a big part of it.”

Rick Cook set the current track record in July at 4.76 seconds, but Hanna expects many racers to challenge that mark on Saturday. Brian Herzog, who won the event in July, Bud Morgan and Tony Thorn are some of the racers set to challenge the track record in what could be ideal conditions for a record run.

The top speed record was set by Taylor Lastor at 151 mph.

“There’s been a lot of racers in this area,” Hanna said. “It’s slowly developing across the county. We’re excited that the movement has been so good in the area and we need to tap into that. We want to entertain on the local levels.”

Notes: Local racers can test-n’-tune with slick-tire cars for $15 ... adult admission is $10 on Friday and $15 on Saturday ... children under 12 are free ... Angleton Dragway is located three miles east of the intersection of F.M. 523 and F.M. 2004
