Claude Curtis Shoemaker

Claude Curtis Shoemaker was born March 26, 1926, in Chireno, Texas, to Josie and Eugene Shoemaker. He passed away on Monday, November 2, 2009, at Brazosport Regional Health System at the age of 83 years.

Curtis married Marie Ryman on December 23, 1947, in Angleton, Texas. They had four children, Patsy Lou, Susie, Bobby and Donnie. He enlisted in the Army on June 27, 1944, was inducted at Camp Walters, Texas, and seved in the Armored Division. He served our country in the 385th Military Police, serving in the European Theater after arriving at La Harve, France, in March 1945. He was discharged on June 15, 1946, at Fort Sam Houston. He continued to serve in the Army Reserve from 1946 to 1953.

Curtis drove a truck for Coca-Cola in Bay City and for Seymour’s Lumber Yard in Columbus, Texas. The family moved to Lake Jackson in 1962. He and Marie owned and operated the Shoemaker Gulf Service Station on Circle Way for many years. During ownership of the service station, Curtis sponsored the “Gulf No Nox’s,” a girls softball team in Lake Jackson. Curtis and Marie valued the friendship of their many customers. He went to work for the Dow Chemical, and after 20 years of service, retired in 1992 from Styrene 1 at Plant B. He also was instrumental in starting the Gulf Coast Rescue Squad and served as a reserve deputy for the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Department Marine Division.

After retirement, Curtis loved to fish and work in his garden and raising his Beefmaster cows. His favorite thing was spoiling his many grandchildren. He had a special love for children.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Patsy; and sisters and brothers, Beatrice Ackley, Barbara Williams and Oscar Shoemaker.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marie; children, Susie (Roger) Shugart, Robert (Kim) Shoemaker and Donnie (Vickie) Shoemaker; and grandchildren, Glen Shugart, Billywayne Shoemaker, Charles Shugart and Lisa Shoemaker; along with 13 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Lakewood Funeral Home on Dixie Drive in Clute, Texas, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4, 2009, and services will be at Lakewood Funeral Chapel on Thursday, November 5, 2009, at 2 p.m. with Edward Frankum officiating.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to the nursing staff at Brazosport Regional Health System and to Dr. Raj Dalal, Dr. Blair Krell and Dr. Laurie McAdow at the VA Hospital in Houston.
