Bertina’s primary education was completed in the Glen Flora community and she graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School, Houston, Texas. She graduated from Texas Southern University with a bachelor of science degree in Education and a masters of education degree in education. Bertina was a certified librarian.

Bertina married Charlie Walker on February 23, 1941. She later moved to Freeport, Texas, where she taught second and fourth grade at Lanier R. O’Hara Elementary School in the Brazosport Independent School District for 20 years. She was loved and respected by many students and still today is known for instilling lady-like qualities and moral values young ladies should have in order to be respected. She moved back to Houston, Texas, and taught for 24 years in the Aldine Independent School District and retired as a reading and math teacher.

Bertina joined Gamma Omega Zeta in 1976. She is a life member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She served as Basileus in 1993-1995. Bertina’s pet projects were prevention of teenage pregnancy, educational scholarships to deserving students and the initiation of Gama Omega Zeta’s first group of Pearlettes. She made every effort to ensure that the chapter was well informed of National and Regional information.

Bertina was a member of Providence Baptist Church for over 45 years. She served as president of the missionary society, financial comptroller, chairperson of the board of trustees, superintendent of the Church School, founder of the J.P. Barrett Scholarship Fund, Sunday school teacher, and the president of the Women’s Department of New Progressive General Baptist Association of Texas.

Bertina was a woman of compassion and class. Through unfailing loyalty and countless contributions, the cause of youth was dear to Bertina’s heart. The problems of youth were a reality. She took a vicarious interest in all their trials and helped countless young people by always speaking words of encouragement and advising youth to higher and nobler ideals. Reading was a favorite pastime. She communicated to her students: Reading achieves knowledge, and knowledge achieves power. She was honest, loving and kind-mannered. She was sincere and genuine in her approach. She has left behind a beautiful memory of love and respect. Let us try to emulate her character.
