Feriece E. Benkula
Feriece E. Benkula peacefully passed away November 4, 2009. She will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends.
Born on June 9, 1925, in Hull-Daisetta, Texas, to Tessie Ott Gilfillian and Jessie Gilfillian, she was raised in Beaumont, Texas, and graduated from French High School. In 1960 she married George Graham and they soon after moved to Brazoria, Texas, where she still maintained her home at the time of her death.
Following George’s death she was married to Clarence Benkula, who predeceased her also. She loved to travel and had the opportunity to visit much of the United States and Great Britain. However, her favorite pastime was decorating her home, where she loved to entertain. The annual Thanksgiving Holiday was her favorite occasion when the entire family gathered at her house in Brazoria and later at her son’s home in Galveston.
She was predeceased by her mother, father and three brothers, Jessie J. Gilfillian, Derrell Gilfillian and Onis Gilfillian.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jack C. and Maria Brock of Galveston; her brother and sister-in-law, Hollis and Wana Gilfillian of Hamshire; her sister and brother-in-law, Pansy and Raymond Westman of Vidor, and her sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn Sue (Suzy) and Robert (Rip) Psyck of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, all of whom she dearly loved. Any opportunity to visit with her many nieces and nephews was special. They and their spouses are Ray and Dawn Westman, Sherry and David Orlando, Hollis (Peanut) and Tammie Gilfillian, Debbie and Dennis Diltz, Kirby Darrell and Penny Gilfillian, Karen and David Creel, Roger and Liz Westman, Ginger and Mike Carribine, Jessie Gilfillian, Archie and Leah Gilfillian, Scott Psyck and Erik Psyck. Likewise, one of Feriece’s great pleasures was time spent with her life long friend, Doris Booty, of Lake Jackson, Texas, and her friend Erma Wassek of Brazoria.
Feriece had a special place in the heart of many and will be missed by us all.
Visitation for friends and family will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, November 6, 2009, at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia, Texas.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, November 7, 2009, at Broussard Mortuary on McFaddin St. in Beaumont, Texas.
Many thanks are owed to the friends, family and professionals who assisted Feriece in recent years when her health required, but special thanks are offered to Dr. Pat Herlihy, Kim Oros, the staff of Tuscany Village Residential Facilty, and to her sister, Suzy, who was always there.
