Brazosport Exporter head coach Mike Ferrell talks to his team Wednesday during practice in Freeport.

FREEPORT — Brazosport head football coach/associate athletic director Michael Ferrell has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, Brazosport ISD announced Thursday afternoon.

"Due to a personnel matter, coach Scott Smithey will be serving as interim head football coach at Brazosport High School immediately," Brazosport ISD Superintendent Danny Massey said in a statement.

Smithey is the team's defensive coordinator.

Ferrell is in his second season at Brazosport after spending four years as head coach at North Forest. He guided the Exporters to their first playoff appearance in a decade last season, then to the school's first playoff win since 1999 in finishing 8-4.

The Ships are 3-4 this season and 2-1 in district. They will face off against Columbia in a District 13-4A DI game 7:30 p.m. Friday at Griggs Field at Columbia High School.
