Spectators in the 23rd District Courtroom of Brazoria County the morning of Dec. 7, 1958, must have been disappointed at the extremely routine nature of the testimony.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Sam Laird told of Ethel Mae “Kitty” Simpson coming to their home at the Laird Fishing Camp near Brazoria about 12:10 a.m. July 3, asking for help and claiming an unknown black man had killed her husband and raped her.
