My favorite professor at college was an elderly Ulsterman by the name of R. Buick Knox. For some reason the American students found his name funny — something about a rattling automobile — we just called him “Buick.”

Unlike many academics, Buick was a very humble man. He had dedicated his life to the study of Reformation history, in which he was an expert. Once a semester he led chapel worship and always chose the same hymn, “St. Patrick’s Breastplate”: “I bind unto myself today the strong name of the Trinity, by invocation of the same, the Three-in-One, and One-in-Three.”

Dr. Alan Trafford is pastor at Covenant Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Lake Jackson.
