With their big brown eyes and stoic expressions, capybaras — capys for short — are sort of adorable. At least, some people think so.

Capybaras are the largest rodents in the world. The Smithsonian National Zoological Park says they can grow to be a little more than 4 feet long, more than a foot and a half tall, and weigh more than 100 pounds. But unlike the fearsome and fictitious Rodents of Unusual Size in the 1987 movie “The Princess Bride,” capybaras are social animals that some people say make great pets.
