SURFSIDE BEACH — Initially intended to carry settlers and supplies to the mouth of the Colorado River, the schooner Lively had unanticipated difficulties on its way from New Orleans, resulting in a deposit of settlers and supplies at the mouth of the Brazos River for a much needed “pit stop.”

That pit stop became a city, Velasco, which quickly grew into a settlement and an important piece of colonial Texas history.
