We are a people who increasingly expect near-instant gratification. We can blame computers, but it started well before that. Horse-drawn carriages gave way to automobiles. Traditional ovens were too slow. Enter microwaves. Fax machines took too much effort. Now we have email. Dial-up internet gave way to high-speed Wifi.

We also are a people averse to discomfort. Air conditioning, even cooled or heated car seats, depending on the season, help us to stay at optimum comfort.
