I prefer to call my sources’ office lines first, especially if it’s between 9 and 5. I think it’s the polite thing to do.

While I’ve had to call public information officers at some odd hours, I never imagined myself sitting on my bed with my laptop in front of me at midnight, dialing cellphone numbers for mayors and city managers, adrenaline rushing through my body because my cats just drank the tap water in their bowls. I was scared.
