The mayors of Lake Jackson and Clute showed leadership Friday in becoming the first southern Brazoria County cities to require businesses to require employees and customers to wear masks and social distance.

If that sounds convoluted, it’s because it is. City and county governments can’t directly require masks and social distancing as an effort to stop a drastic spike in COVID-19 cases in Texas. The governor won’t allow that. They can, however, pass the buck to businesses and require them to require it of their customers if they want to keep their doors open. And of course we want that.

Masks are nothing more than a talisman.

Comrade Mintz is following the directive of the Politburo. What's next..... tattooing an ID number on our left forearm?

Bulldog

Just around the corner

Just sick that y’all would compare wearing a mask with the Holocaust. I had the honor of knowing 2 people that survived the Holocaust and this is not even comparable based on the stories they shared. You should be ashamed for that comparison.

Come on bull, no synonyms of talisman seem to apply - maybe lucky charm? I'll wear a mask, protect myself and family (and protect you); but let me know where you will be, so I can go elsewhere. AMP, Maybe it would be a place to put a Nazi Id number, eh? Incidentally the politburo (Russia) did not tattoo ID's like Nazis.

Bulldog

I will be the one without a mask

Bulldog

Correct. The Russians slaughtered their people right away

I’m with you, Yvonne. I want to hug my parents again and I care about the health of those around me, even those who think masks are useless.

• I had intended to point out that Ms. Mintz is only the messenger. Why aren't y'all "virus Luddites" complaining about your elected leaders, about whom she was commenting? However, turns out that as I sat to enter this, I happened to remember the well-written and inciteful June 26 guest column by DR. BEN G., RAIMER. It's interesting none of you complainers criticize him; interesting!? He ends the column thusly: "We each have responsibility for supporting public health in our communities — to take care of ourselves and each other. Fortunately, research confirms we all have simple tools for combatting COVID-19. Keep our (physical) distance. Stay home and isolated from others if we are ill. Wash our hands — more often than we think we need to. And wear a mask!" [scared][crying]
