The drowning death of a service member over the weekend again raises the question of why Brazoria County beaches do not have lifeguards.

As a stretch of coastline notorious for riptides, an extra layer of protection for visitors unaware of their prevalence and danger would prevent the senseless tragedy the family of Air Force airman Elijah Posana is experiencing. The body of the 22-year old who went missing Sunday afternoon at Surfside Beach was recovered Tuesday morning.
