Jax loves going to school, and he doesn’t need Mom to nag him to get in the car.

“He’s figured out the timing in the morning, and he’ll start waiting for his halter, hopping around, runs straight to the garage and waits by the car,” said Jax’s “mom” Samantha Yearout. Jax is a 2-year-old English bulldog who accompanies “sister” Ella Yearout in the car rider line at Barrow Elementary in Brazoria.

Jax is motivated to get to school because he knows teacher Dana Matula Wachtel will be there to give him treats.

Samantha Yearout said, “Everyday he goes with us, since he was a puppy. Every day he is ready to go. He loves Dana. That’s his best friend.”

Wachtel said she started handing out dog treats last year when she regularly saw Jax in the car rider line.

Then, the dog treat idea snowballed. In fact, Walmart just donated 35 pounds of dog treats to the Barrow Derrickhands and their dogs. She’s hoping to host a puppucino day soon.

“There’s five to seven regulars that come now,” Wachtel said laughing. In May, on the last day of school, she even sent Jax a goodie bag to hold him over the summer.

Samantha Yearout said he pouted anyway.

“He is rotten,” Samantha Yearout said.
